In 1969, Richard Gere began performing at the Provincetown Playhouse in Cape Cod and the Seattle Repertory Theatre. He made his theater debut in Grease on the London stage back in 1973. With the release of The Lords of Flatbush in 1974, Gere’s Hollywood career got underway in the middle of the ‘70s. He had minor roles in Days of Heaven and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. His biggest break came with the 1980 crime film American Gigolo, though.
Gere became known for his role in the romance drama An Officer and a Gentleman, for which he received credits and won two Academy Awards.
